Five Factors to Consider When Choosing a Drama School
Published on Friday, 18 June 2010

There is never a shortage of hopefuls signing up for training courses at drama schools. But with so many schools that have spread out all over the country, how do you know which one is the right for you? Below are the factors to consider in choosing a school that should help you on your first steps into the acting world.
Specialization - Different schools specialize on different types of programs. Your choice can either be film or theatre. Film drama schools will teach you plenty of techniques in acting in front of the camera. However, it will be much more advantageous if you take theatre since most casting directors would prefer actors with theatre backgrounds.
Good Reputation - Ask agents and directors at seminars you attend to what school they can recommend and what it is best known for. A school's reputation is perhaps the most important factor in choosing a school that will equip you with all the skills you need in the specialization you've chosen.
Faculty - Teachers play a big role in molding and enhancing an actor's talent. Find out if you will be trained by excellent working actors. It also helps to consider the student faculty ratio to make sure you get to participate on scenes in every class.
Trainings - Ask if the schools can help you with headshots, resumes and cover letters. Do they offer seminars and workshops with working professionals? Do they have a film department where you can mingle with aspiring film makers and work on a reel together? All these things will help you land your first acting post.
Budget - Like any courses, attending a drama school can be really expensive. The fees, books, supplies, the room, are just few of the expenses you need to prepare for. If this is a major concern, find a school which offers financial aid.
